The band was formed when vocalist Quino and guitarist Rey Montoya, two friends from San Diego, decided to start a band playing their favorite Caribbean music. They hooked up with bassist KJ Sanchez and drummer Andy Bassford and began performing in local clubs. They soon developed a loyal following and began to tour the US, eventually opening for Santana and The Wailers.

In 1994, Big Mountain released their first album, Unity, which featured their hit cover of “Baby I Love Your Way.” The song was a massive success, reaching the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the chart for 23 weeks. It was certified gold in the US and was a hit in countries around the world.

The band continued to release albums throughout the 90s and 2000s, and their music has been featured in a variety of films and television shows. In later years, they focused more on performing live, playing shows around the US and internationally.

Big Mountain continued to tour and record music, and they are widely regarded as one of the greatest reggae bands in the world, and an essential part of the reggae-rock scene.
