Pride was raised in a musical family; his father played guitar, and his mother sang in church. At age 14, he bought his first guitar and later joined a local gospel vocal quartet. After serving in the U.S. Army, he began performing in clubs in Helena, Arkansas, and began playing further afield in East Texas, the Mid-South, and eventually Nashville.

In 1967, he won the Grammy for best country & western recording for “Just Between You and Me.” By then, he had made the move to Nashville. He released several hits over the next few years, and in 1969 he landed his biggest hit to date: “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'”. The song went to number one on both the country chart and the pop chart in 1970.

Pride continued to record hits throughout the 1970s, and he became the first Black artist to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1993. Since then, he has continued to tour and record, and he became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.
