Dolly Parton is an international superstar singer, songwriter, actress, TV personality. She grew up in very humble beginnings in Tennessee, suffering near poverty as one of 12 children and her early songs like “Coat Of Many Colours” reflect this.
Dolly began performing at a very early age and was making TV appearances by the time she was 8 years old. In 1964, she moved to Nashville and appeared at the Grand Old Oprey. In 1967 Porter Wagoner invited her to appear as a regular on his TV show and they released a duet “The Last Thing On My Mind”. For the next few years Dolly Parton released several solo singles and continued to duet with Wagoner and in 1970 she released a cover of Mule Skinner Blues which shot to number 3 in the charts. After her split with Porter Wagoner she wrote a song about their time together “I Will Always Love You” which went to number 1 in the Country Charts in the States.
Dolly Parton is still popular around the world, regularly tours, makes TV appearances. She also continues to help children in her homeland having set up a programme to give a reading book to every child born every year until they go to kindergarten. She also has a theme park attraction called Dollywood.
Her achievements over her career are numerous:- Grammy, Country Music Academy, Tony Award, Hollywood Walk Of Fame pavement star, National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame, Living Legend Medal – and what a legend she is (as proved in 2014 when she appeared on stage at the iconic Glastonbury Festival!)
