Best known for his hit song “American Pie” from the 1971 album of the same name, Don McLean is an American singer / songwriter whose style has always been firmly based in folk due to his friendship with members of a group called The Weavers.
As a child, Don McLean missed a lot of his studies due to chronic asthma, but his love of music wasn’t affected and he would spend hours from a very young age listening to the radio and playing records. As a teenager he took possession of his first guitar and also went to singing lessons. This helped with his breathing and in turn his asthma improved.
Don McLean has garnered over 40 gold and platinum records world-wide and, in 2004, was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. He continues to tour the world and in June 2011 he performed for an audience of 100,000 at the famous Glastonbury Festival in the UK. In May and June 2015 he is embarking of a full tour of the UK and Ireland.
