Born to a street musician father and a cabaret singer mother, Piaf was abandoned by her parents and taken in by her paternal grandmother who ran a brothel. She began singing for customers at the age of six and later joined her father in a vaudeville act. By the age of 15, Piaf had established her fame in the French music scene, and in 1935 she began touring Europe. She soon became a star in Parisian cabarets and was discovered by nightclub impresario Louis Leplée, whose assassination in 1936 brought her sudden fame. Piaf became part of the wartime cabaret circuit and achieved international fame with her 1945 song “La Vie en rose”.

Throughout her career, Piaf recorded over 100 songs in a repertoire that included chanson, cabaret, and American jazz. She wrote most of her own material and came to be regarded as one of the most influential singers in French music history.
