George Formby, OBE (26 May 1904 – 6 March 1961), was an English (Lancastrian) actor, singer-songwriter and comedian who became known to a worldwide audience through his films of the 1930s and 1940s.
He started off his career as a stable boy and jockey but took to the stage after the death of his father who was a comedy performer. In 1926 George Formby began his recording career and worked in film. By the late 1930s and 1940s, he had became the UK’s most popular entertainer. During the Second World War he entertained civilians and troops.
