Into The Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical encompasses the plots of several fairy tales. The main characters are taken from “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Rapunzel”, and “Cinderella”. The plot follows the story of a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family. They wish to end a curse placed on them by a vengeful witch, and meet other storybook characters during their journey.
The musical which premiered on Broadway in 1986 has since been produced many times including a US national tour, a West End production, a tenth anniversary concert, a Broadway revival, a London revival, and in 2012 it was performed as part of New York City’s outdoor Shakespeare in the Park series.
In 2014 Disney released a film adaptation of the musical. It was named one of the top eleven best films of 2014 by the American Film Institute and received three Academy Award nominations and three Golden Globe Award nominations.
