1971 Interesting Facts

Elton John had his first international hit with ‘Your Song’. The lyrics were written by Bernie  Taupin who is reported to have said, “I scribbled the lyric down on a lined notepad at the kitchen table of Elton’s mother’s apartment in the London suburb of Northwood Hills, breakfast time sometime in 1969. That’s it. Plain and simple.”

The Grammy Awards were televised live for the first time in its 13 year history. Hosted by Andy Williams the awards ceremony celebrated the previous years great music including : Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, The Carpenters ‘Close To You’ and The Beatles ‘Let It Be’.

The Concert for Bangladesh was staged at Madison Square Garden, New York. Starring the likes of George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan and also featuring Billy PrestonEric Clapton, Jesse Ed Davis and Badfinger. Concert for Bangladesh is recognised as a highly successful and influential humanitarian aid project.

Cher enjoyed her first solo number 1 in America with ‘Gypsies, Tramps & Theives’.

The Broadcast receiver licence in the UK was abolished for radios effectively giving music lovers free access to BBC radio channels.
