Born in London in 1954, Charles was influenced early on by Motown music and The Beatles, and she learned to play the piano and drums as a child. She later attended drama school and began her career in the entertainment industry as a session singer. She recorded her first solo single in 1969 with a then-unknown Elton John playing piano.

In 2017, Charles was honoured with the Music Industry Trusts Award in recognition of her influence on the music industry and her charitable efforts. Today, Charles continues to perform throughout the world, delighting audiences with her vibrant stage presence and classic disco hits.
